If you haven't heard Dick Clark passed today, he was 82 years old. Dick's first day of hosting American Bandstand was July 9, 1956. I'm not sure how old I was, or when I started watching, but I can tell you there weren't many Saturday afternoons where our black and white TV wasn't turned on to hear that song when I was growing up. 

By the way, the words to the "Bandstand Boogie" were written by Barry Manilow and Bruse Sussman.

Bandstand Trivia: B.B. King is the only performer NOT to lip-synch on American Bandstand.

My favorite bozo story of the day...or as Frank Delima calls it "Babooze of the day..." A man in Munich allegedly had to flee to the police after a woman demanded too much sex!. Here are the details...after several amicably agreed upon rolls in the day, the man reportedly tried to leave, but she would have no part in that and insisted on more sex. According to authorities, that's when he ran to the cops for help!

Hollywood News...Johnny Depp is being sued by a disabled woman, who's in a wheel chair, who claims his security team roughed her up during a concert...Johnny is claiming that she isn't disabled, because there are reports that she went to see his movie "The Tourist" and actually walked out....(okay I made that last part up...sorry!)

This day in history...in 1994, David Lee Roth was arrested in New York City for purchasing marijuana. Back then, David was using it to party...these days he's probably buying it for glaucoma...(okay I'll stop)

Good morning and welcome to Wednesday! Tomorrow we find out why the members of Aerosmith are so excited these days. They've already announced the first 18 dates of their "Global Warming Tour", but bassist Tom Hamilton has posted on Twitter that the group members are going to talk about the tour and other aerotimely stuff.  Steve Tyler has also tweeted that band has stuff to give away. Stay tuned...

 One of my favorites Chaotic Five (the youngest Classic Rock band in Hawaii) has a few upcoming dates...Saturday April 14th, 7 pm - 8 pm, Ala Moana Centerstage; Sunday April 22, 12 pm - 1 pm, Hard Rock Cafe; Sunday May 20 2 pm, "Ride For The Fallen" at Cycle City. 

On this day... in 1964 the Beatles had all top 6 chart positions in Australia with #1 being "I Saw Here Standing There." And in 1967 Van Morrison has just wrapped up recording "Brown Eyed Girl" is New York. On this day in 1969, America got it's first look at Joe Cocker as he played his first gig at the Fillmore East in New York.

It's Friday and other notes...

Hunger Games heading for a record breaking weekend! Fans that attended the midnight premiere are faving about it. Some of the tweets said: "best movie ever", "epic" and "bigger than Twilight". It's definetly the movie to see this weekend.

Also in the movie (and names you might recognize) Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland.

Blowin' out candles today, Ric Ocasek, Chaka Khan and John Wayne Bobbitt (ouch it hurts just to say his name!

Attention Dead Heads...the genesis of the San Francisco music scene led by the Grateful Dead is the subject of a comprehensuve documentary "Dawn of the Dead - The Grateful Dead & The Rise of the San Francisco UNderground". It'll be available on DVD May 22. Rare archive footage is promised.

Speaking of movies, there will be a "Hangover Part III", hitting theaters May 24, 2013. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms are all set to return.

I didn't get a chance to mention this during the show, but a deluxe reissue of the Paul and Linda McCartney 1971 album, "Ram" is being prepared for a May 22 release by Concord Music Group. It's the only album officially ever credited to the former Beatles couple. It'll be available as a standard CD, an expanded 2-CD set, a deluxe box set, and as a vinyl LP and digital download.

International Goof-Off Day

Reese Witherspoon celebrates her birthday today, she's 36 and the latest rumor is that she is 12 weeks hapai.

The Muppets have finally secured their place in Hollywood history with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their latest movie was released on DVD this week. I wish I could have watched it with my son's but it was still a fun movie.

More Cowbell! There's going to be a cowbell concert next month to help mark the 15th anniversary of the partnership between the rock band Phish and the ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's. Both the band and the company are from Burlington and are planning the world's largest cowbell ensemble on April 14. Proceeds from the event will go towards the band's charity to help the state recover from Tropical Storm Irene. The performance will be lead by Phish drummer Jon Fishman. 

Sports rumor...Tim Tebow may be heading to New York...

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" has fallen a notch on Britain's best-selling album list. It was surpassed by Adele's 21. 

We had a great visit with the Harlem Globetrotters Wednesday morning. Tickets for the game/show May 12 go on sale Thursday morning at the Blaisdell Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations.

Iconic British rock group YES will stop in Hawaii on their way back from a tour of Australia and Japan, with concerts at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Friday, April 27^th and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater on Sunday, April 29^th! Both shows will begin at 7:30pm.

It's the first day of Spring...when a young (hey...and an old man's) man's attention turns to thoughts of...

Nobody throws a party like Jimmy Buffett! The weather for the day was a little iffy...but by the time the shell echoed with Hot Hot Hot, and Jimmy took to the stage, the skies had cleared and I think even the clouds were dancing! It's always fun to watch Parrott Heads in full battle gear. There's something that happens to a crowd when Jimmy plays and sings that we need to bottle and spread around the world! 

March Madness will meet up with rockers KISS when the legendary band performs a free concert along the Mississippi River in downtown New Orleans to celebrate the NCAA Final Four. Kiss will kick off The Big Dance Concert Series on Friday March 30.


Superstars Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are preparing to release their new box set. Strange Euphoria is a four-disc, 50 song collection of huge Heart hits, previously unreleased demos and rarities. The release happens June 5. The box set by the way, will be in the shape of a Heart! They'll also have a new studio album called Fanatic coming out on October 2. There's also a summer tour in the works.

Really???? It was on this day in 1990, the Colorado legislature made it legal to tear the "Do Not Remove" tags off mattresses.


It's also Proposal Day...if you're ready go ahead and pop the question!


Not the biggest news of the day...a swimmsuit model has been arrested on charges of heading an international meth ring...thinking out loud, "where do you hide the meth in a thong"...okay I'll stop.


Good news...(okay wishful thinking on my part)...Kate Hudson is not married, Goldie tweeted late Monday, "Darling once again twisted the truth. They aren't married."

Dancing with the Stars...Season Premiere tonight (Monday 3/19/12)...it's season 14, here are the new line-up of celebs, Jack Wagner, Family Matter's Jaleel White, Sherri Shepard, Melissa Gilbert, Disney star  Roshon Fegan, William Levy, Extra host Maria Menounos, pop singer Gavin Degraw, Opera Singer Katherine Jenkins, Gladys Knight, Green Bay Packers star Donald Driver and tennis great Martina Navratilova. 


And finally...Angry Birds Space lands this week...Thursday March 22 a new game will join the Angry Birds line-up. Angry Birds Space takes the war between the Angry Birds and their pig foes to outer space. Fans will enjoy 60 new challenges and 6 new charactors to join the battle. Zero gravity comes into play in this edition, and the game creators say you really have to think about what's going to happen with your shots because there are so many more options. Some of the familiar characters have brand new superpowers, like Yellow Bird now has laser targeting capabilities.

End of another era...Did you hear that Encyclopedia of Britanica is no longer going to be published. I have to really thank them for giving me a lift in 

life! If it wasn't for two of them I wouldn't have been able to reach the table at dinner time!

...Bummed that the Stones are going to wait to next year to celebrate their 50th anniversary. However they may play a few select cities, let's hope Honolulu is on that list.

Great News this morning: Elton John is ready to release a new album come the fall called the "The Diving Board". T-Bone Burnett served as John's producer on the project. It's a return to John's early recordings featuring piano, bass and drums. T-Bone just finished up a project for Lisa Marie Presley which will be out May 15th.

The powers-that-be at Magnoia pictures have picked an unforgettable release date for the forthcoming Bob Marley documentary, Marley. The date 4/20!

DOOBIE BROTHER DIES OF CANCER...Mike Hossack, longtime drummer for the Dobbie Brothers' has died of cancer. Mike was 65. He was the drummer during the band;s heyday, during the early 70's. He rejoined the band in 1987 and stopped performing two years ago. His work can be heard on "Listen to the Music" and "China Grove". He served in the Navy during the Vietnam war and is survived by his son and daughter. He died at his home in Wyoming on Monday.

Everybody is buzzing about the new restaurant that Gene Simmons of Kiss plans to build on Maui. The chain is called Rock & Brews. He also has plans to build them in Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta and Tokyo. According to a company statement, when you're there, you should feel like you're backstage of a rock event. 

This Friday someone is going to win what we're calling the Ultimate Parrot Head experience! We're going to set you up the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel this weekend with dinner for two, an invitation to Jimmy's pre-show party, goodies from Margaritaville and 6th row seats to the show! It's been a lot of fun "finding Jimmy's lost shaker of salt." Congratulations to all of our finalist and as of this writing you two more days to qualify. Jimmy Buffett plays plays the Waikiki

More Reunions on the horizon!

First, congratulations to our Elton John ticket winners this week! I certainly hope you had as much fun winning them, as we had giving them away! I'll be spending this weekend cleaning out my personal email box, but it was worth it! Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and Uncle Tom will be doing a portion of his show from the Neil Blasidell box office tomorrow. For an "on sale day" update, be sure to tune in Uncle Tom's Rock and Roll Drive-in tomorrow.

Faces announced today that they'll tour in 2010 without Rod Stewart. The says they've been waiting for Rod, but can't wait any longer. The last two the group got together without Rod, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall sat in...not a bad substitute!

Kiss has announced they're planning a live stream for next week. Facebook, via UStream will broadcast the band's November 25th show at the Los Angeles' Staples Center. It'll be the first ever live web concert for KISS.

Happy B-day today to Joe Walsh (62), Norman Greenbaum (67) and my friend Susan Bruhl! She's married to Bill of the Bluwater Grill. If you happen to see Susan wish her a happy 24th b-day! (that'll get me a free dinner :))

Looking forward musically to 2010!

Be sure to check out our news story of James Taylor and Carole King getting together for a tour next year. Both James and Carole have always been Hawaii favorites, and if you note that they'll be heading off to Austrailia and Japan...you got to believe that a Hawaii stop has got to come up in the mix. I'll keep my ear to the ground and let you know if anything develops.

James has a great DVD out that you really should pick up if you're a JT fan. It's one of my favorites when I kick back on a Sunday afternoon.

Elton John is coming!

Thank you Uncle Tom for stopping in this morning and sharing with us the information on the Elton John concert. If you weren't tuned in Tom Moffatt Productions is bringing Elton John back to Hawaii to kick off 2010. The show happens Wednesday night January 6, 8 pm at Blasidell Arena. Tickets go on sale this Saturday November 21st at 9 am at the Blasidell Box office, all Ticket Master outlets, on line at ticketmaster.com or you can charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Ticket prices range from $60 to $160. We gave away a pair of tickets this morning, and we have another pair on Thursday and a pair on Friday to giveaway.

A lot of new fans are asking "who is Ray Cooper?" Here some information that I found for you...Ray started his recording career in the '60's with the Who. He first worked with Elton in 1971,on his Mad Man Across the Water album. In the late 70's they toured as a duo in which Elton would play a solo set and then be joined by Cooper on percussion for the 2nd half of the show. Ray Cooper has also worked with America, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones! Quite an impressive list!

Wow, according to this morning's news Steven Tyler is ending his association with Aerosmith and will soon be going solo. (Read the details at our website at 1079koolgold.com). Joe Perry is saying the band is already looking for a new singer. Those of you that got to see them here in Honolulu got to see what may have been one of their final performances! You gotta wish everyone involved the best...and thanks for the many years of great rock and roll!

I'm looking forward to seeing Loggins and Messina this weekend. The Blaisdell Concert Hall is a great venue to see these guys. There are still a few tickets available so get yours today. Speaking of concerts, I hear the Stylistics will be here for a New Years celebration, as soon as more information is available, you'll read it right here. Speaking of concerts something big may be on the horizon...we should have details maybe in a week or so.

Andrew Burwitz has been arrested for endangering safety by reckless use of a firearm, four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, and criminal property damage. You see Andrew attempted a drive by shooting of his ex's home...however Andrew made a major mistake...he forgot to roll his car window down! Police were able to trace the broken glass to Andrew...dummy under arrest!

I had a chance to check out the new C & K show in the Monarch room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and as I said it marked their return to Waikiki after some 30 plus years. What a kick off to what should be a successful run for all of us! Cecilio & Kapono still hold the magic as entertainers, musicians and song writers. From the beginning to the end of the show, I was held captive to the songs, their presence and their music. Your favorite songs are there, well as many as they could fit into and hour and 10 minute performance plus some new jewels as well. They're back where they started!

Tonight marks the return of Cecilio & Kapono to Waikiki! Waikiki is where most discovered C&K, at a place called the Rainbow Villa, all those years ago. I had just started in radio then, and remember being asked by my friend Carl Smith who at the time was running the Columbia Records, Honolulu office to listening to something in his office. He was excited and came by the studio's (we shared the same floor at 765 Amana Street, 5th floor back then) and said I had to hear his new test pressing. It was a test pressing of the new C & K album! I can't remember who was on the air down the hall, but I know we were first to get it on the air. It was an exciting time in both the music business and radio. I had a brief conversation with Henry this morning about tonight's show and they are really excited about this return to Waikiki. They'll be two shows every Thursday night through December with a break for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I hope you get a chance to stop by and enjoy the magic of Cecilio & Kapono. AC/DC's "Backtracks" Drops Next Tuesday

AC/DC's box set "Backtracks" is available for fans next Tuesday. The Aussie band has revealed that the "ultimate collection" is packaged inside an amplifier that actually works. Included are three CDs consisting of both studio and live tracks, as well as the DVDs "Family Jewels" and "Live At The Circus Krone." Other goodies in the deluxe set include a 164-page coffee-table book, an 180-gram vinyl LP, original memorabilia reproductions of three fine art lithographs, the "Lock Up Your Daughters" tour flyer, the 1977 "Let There Be Rock" European tour poster, an Angus "Beanie" sticker, and the King Street Studios multi tracks for "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." The "Backtracks" collection is available November 10th.

Norton Buffalo has left the building...

I had a chance to see him with the Steve Miller Band on their visits here and finally got a chance to met him after an after concert party on their last visit, when he made a stop at Jimmy Buffett's new place in Waikiki. It turns out that Norton Buffalo and Kap'n Paul (my former morning show partner) were grow up together. He got up and jammed with the Pirahna Brothers. What a musician and nice guy too! I was sad to read this morning that Norton passed Friday night from cancer. He was 58. If you didn't know Norton appeared on 180 albums and spent 33 years as a member of the Steve Miller Band. Besides Steve he worked with just about everyone in the music business. Norton's life will be celebrated January 23 at the Fox Theatre in a benefit concert starring the Steve Miller Band, The Doobie Brothers, Huey Lewis, George Thorogood and Bonnie Raitt. (That's Norton in the top right picture) Thanks Kapn Paul for introducing to one of your boyhood friends!

Monday Monday!

Aloha and I hope you had a wonderful Halloween weekend. Hopefully the "out of sight, out of mind" theory works, but I'm running out of places to hide the candy from my boys!

If you haven't heard, Sony is extending the "limited engagement" run for "This Is It". I've also heard that once the run is over, it'll soon be on video in time for holiday gift giving!

Icons Visited Madison Square Garden At "Rock Hall 25" Celebration On Friday

The music industry is still buzzing over the star power at Friday's "The 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" concerts. Night two of the Madison Square Garden shows to mark the Hall of Fame's quarter-century mark featured collaborations and legends. Hall of Famers U2, Aretha Franklin, Metallica and The Jeff Beck Band were among those who participated in the festivities. A few surprise guests also joined in. According to "Rolling Stone," Patti Smith, the Black Eyed Peas and Bruce Springsteen jammed with U2. Also joining the Irish rockers was Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones frontman sang "Gimme Shelter" with Bono. Aretha Franklin -- "Rock Hall 25's" sole female artist -- welcomed her son Teddy, who played in her band. Annie Lennox and Lenny Kravitz also joined the Queen of Soul on stage. Metallica's A-list friends included Ozzy Osbourne, Ray Davies of The Kinks and Lou Reed. Jeff Beck shared the stage with Sting on "People Get Ready." Guitar legend Buddy Guy also supported Beck at the show, as did ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. Beck ended his set with an instrumental rendition of The Beatles' "A Day In the Life" that drew standing ovations.
